Show Garden at Hampton Court Flower Show 2010
6-11 July 2010
The Girlguiding UK Centenary Garden was awarded a
Silver-Gilt medal and the People's Choice
award at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2010.
Designed by Philippa Pearson, the garden
explored modern guiding and the experiences of Girlguiding UK’s
half a million members. Philippa was also inspired by the views of
Rainbows, Brownies and Guides and what they thought the garden
should include.
The Girlguiding UK Centenary Garden had five
main areas, the entrance recognised the beginnings of the
organisation by using plants that were commonly available in 1909,
planted in the style of Gertrude Jekyll – one of the foremost
female garden designers of the time. The remaining four areas
reflected the elements that members say make Girlguiding UK a
unique and thriving organisation. Guiding provides a space for
‘girl time’ was represented by a tent-like tensile structure for
activities, guiding is open to all and actively encourages and
supports diversity was a productive area with international and
unusual vegetables, fruit and herbs; guiding continues to evolve to
remain relevant to today’s girls showed members on film taking part
in a range of activities and girls in guiding have their views and
opinions heard was a turf landform with a chill out area for
thinking and discussion.

Based near Cambridge, RHS medal award winning garden designer
Philippa Pearson takes inspiration for her garden creations from
the countryside and classical and contemporary architecture. Her
design portfolio covers many private gardens across Cambridgeshire,
East Anglia and London and Philippa’s bright and colourful planting
style attracts much attention from visitors, the media and
photographers at RHS shows.
For the Girlguiding UK Centenary garden
Philippa met with Anglia Girlguiding UK groups to help her gain an
insight about what it means to be part of the largest organisation
for girls in the country. These discussions, combined with
consideration of the ideas and suggestions submitted from our
website question in 2009 have been the foundation for the submitted
design.
For those members who were unable to
visit the show, Philippa was blogging about her experiences and
the development of the garden.
