North East England
Girls and young women from Yorkshire joined
over 550,000 girls and women for the UK’s biggest birthday bash of
the year - the launch of Girlguiding UK’s Centenary
celebrations.
Hundreds of events took place over the weekend
of September 5 and 6, with one in Leeds which was particularly
spectacular:
Over 4,500 girls from across the region gathered at Wetherby
Racecourse to mark the start of Girlguiding UK’s Centenary year.
The event started at 11am with a warm up followed by a Fun Run
of 2k around the Racecourse – anyone could be sponsored for this
and the funds raised were donated to different units to fund their
own Centenary events. Everyone who completed the Fun Run was
awarded a Launch Party Fun Run medal. The girls were joined in
their Fun Run by special VIP guests from Leeds Rhinos and the
Yorkshire Cricket club. After the Fun Run the girls had the
opportunity to take part in lots of activities such as climbing
walls, story tellers, inflatables, street performers, disco,
children’s entertainers and a special appearance from Ronnie the
Rhino.
