Around 250 girls and women from north-west Derbyshire were among
over half a million people to take part in the launch of
Girlguiding UK’s centenary celebrations on Saturday 5th
September.
Girls and young women from the High Peak Division of guiding
gathered at the spectacular Mam Tor mountain (almost 1700 feet
high) to form a ‘human 100’ in celebration of Girlguiding UK’s
Centenary year.
Another ‘human 100’ was formed on Grin Low hillside (several
miles away) where girls gathered at the spectacular Solomon’s
Temple. Flares were lit at both venues in recognition of the
Centenary while local volunteers also took to the road and ran
between both peaks.
Organiser Joan Piercy said: “Our launch weekend really was a
chance to show everyone just what opportunities are open to girls
through guiding and how much they enjoy themselves. It’s a great
place to make friends and to take part in hundreds of modern and
relevant activities.”
The event was just one of hundreds taking place on the weekend
of the 5th and 6th of September, right across the UK as Girlguiding
UK launched a year long party of events intended to celebrate
guiding’s unique girl-only space which began back in 1909.
