Introducing – the Girlguiding UK Centenary Camp tent!
The Centenary 4 has been specially designed by leading outdoor
company Outwell and comes in four fab colours.
Each camp group of four Guides will be supplied with one of
these tents which they get to keep and take home with them after
camp.
No need to bring your own tent with you – this will be your home
at camp and there’ll be plenty of space for you and all your
kit.
They’re built to last so your Centenary Camp tent will be a
great souvenir in your Guide unit for years to come.
The tent’s been designed in four colours – blue, orange, bronze
and green – allowing us to allocate different colours for our
different sub camps. So the colour of YOUR tent will depend on
which sub camp you are allocated.
All the tents have an inner pod which easily sleeps four people,
and a spacious outer area with a detachable porch groundsheet. The
Centenary 4 has all the features you’d expect on a high quality,
modern tent, such as pre-attached guy ropes and adjustable pegging
points.
For the tent connoisseurs, it has a hydrostatic head of 2500mm –
which means it will stand up to any “weather” we might encounter in
north Yorkshire next summer!
“We’re really pleased with the quality and design of these
tents,” says Centenary Camp Director, Hilary Cooper. “We know
people will want to take these tents home and pitch them with pride
at their next unit camp!”
Tents will be allocated to camp participants when they arrival
at Harewood House.
Further tents may be available to pre-order via our retail team
– more information on this will be published on the website
shortly.

Changes to the ratios for bookings
Changes to the Centenary Camp Leader/Guide ratios have been
agreed after Directors responded to members’ requests.
Up to now, applications have been invited for groups of four
Guides, led by one adult Leader. Now a revised booking system
has been launched, allowing more flexible group sizes to apply for
places.
Directors, who are all volunteers and members of Girlguiding UK,
had originally wanted to ensure a maximum representation from Guide
units across the UK with the 1:4 formula. But research among
Leaders has shown that a less rigid ratio would allow more units to
take part.
Changes have been made to the online bookings system over the
summer to allow this to happen. Camp Groups of any size can now be
booked on to the Centenary Camp. Directors have also agreed to set
up a special sub camp for Guides and Senior Section members, aged
14-16. These girls will be invited to take part as participants and
will not need a Leader to attend with them. The decision was taken
after consulting members of the Senior Section about the
involvement of this age group in the camp.
“We are really keen to be as flexible as possible,” said
Centenary Camp Director, Hilary Cooper. “We have listened to what
our members have said about the booking arrangements and responded
to a feeling that certain age groups were missing out. It is great
to have this feedback and to be able to respond in a positive
way.”

Visit to Harewood House
The team that will make the Girlguiding UK Centenary Camp happen
for thousands of Guides next summer was buzzing with excitement
after a visit to Harewood House.
The camp site, covering the size of 75 football pitches, will be
held in the grounds of the house, from July 31-August 7, 2010.
Managers got their first look round the site in April and were
joined for the visit by Liz Burnley, the Chief
Guide. "Harewood House is a stunning setting, a beautiful
house in lovely grounds – the perfect choice for the camping
experience of a lifetime", said Sue, Deputy Director of the Retail
Team.
Volunteer managers have a huge job to do over the next 15
months, constructing a village for 10,000 campers, complete with
three restaurants, a market place, an international centre, sub
camps and activities areas.

Managers and Directors are pictured on the steps of
the south terrace at Harewood House.
