Create your own celebration
The Ways to Celebrate catalogue and the centenary
website help you to ‘book and go’ on a wide range of exciting
organised activities and events. Although we've
organised masses of opportunities, to make sure that everyone
has that magic moment we need YOU to be creative too.
Take a look through Activate -
Create Your Own activities - May 2009 (3MB) for some great
ideas inline with the section themes.
Adventures following the themed ideas for each section can be
organised at unit or District level as well as the larger scale
events arranged by Divisions and Counties.
To find out about events being organised in your area, ask your
County Centenary Champion or your local Commissioner.
Lots of creative ideas and practical tips and hints about how to
‘create your own’ themed Adventures have been included in
guiding magazine and on the Centenary website. Visit the
Decision Making page to get some great
ideas on helping your girls to make decisions.
These ideas will help you to organise something locally which is
appropriate to each age range and enable everyone to feel part of
an overall Girlguiding UK celebration event.
If you are new to running events, or are
running a larger event than before and would like additional
support with organising your event, please see the online resource
Centenary Event Planner, which is available in the
Members’ area of the Girlguiding UK website. Even those with a lot
of experience may find the Planning your Centenary Event document
within the Planner a useful point of reference.
Branded promotional materials will be available to event
organisers via County Centenary Champions.

Balloon Releases
Environmentally, balloon releases do a lot of damage and can
affect farming and marine habitats in an adverse way. If you have
already planned to hold a large balloon release we would advise you
to ensure that the balloons are bio-degradable and ask that you do
not attach string, ribbon or tags to the balloons. We would
strongly recommend that this type of spectacle is avoided if at all
possible in your future plans.
Sky Lanterns / Chinese
Lanterns
These, like balloons, eventually fall to the ground and can
cause considerable harm to wild life and the environment. The wire
element of the lantern in particular could kill any animal that
eats it and causes damage to farm machinery. We would strongly
recommend that this type of spectacle is avoided if at all possible
in your future plans.
